One of the way i use with girls is to make,very rarely, a joke about it and watch their reaction which is way more subtil than a mans reaction ;)
If all else fails,go for it,BE obvious about it,tell him how you feel,worst case scenario,he says no.Best case scenario,you found a great guy to spend a couple of weeks,months,years or the rest of your life with!

It's hard,but i think it's worth it,i'm 25 and a woman said no to me for the first time recently,felt bad to start with but then realised she was still my friend and if i REALLY loved her,i'd want her to find someone that will make her happy even if it's not me.
